Open Book Project
Bringing Transparency Back to Schools

What are kids in your neighborhood being taught? You should know: after all, you’re paying for it. What are their teachers telling them about George Washington? ARE they telling them about George Washington?

We feel that the education process could use a little transparency. The schoolhouse doors are not shut to parents. It’s time administrators recognized that.

If you agree, please join us in opening the doors to our public schools — and opening their books. The Open Book Project is a volunteer effort, funded and coordinated by LRI, to find out just what goes on in the classroom.
We’re organizing interested citizens to review the curricula used in K-12 public schools across the country, publishing our results, and putting them out in the open, where anyone can see them.

The first step: volunteers. Lots of them. We’ll need an army to hold every public school accountable — starting with yours. Sign up below and begin restoring accountability today. There’s something to do, no matter what your skillset. Future generations will thank you.

How does it work?
We need volunteers for every part of this process! Whether you're familiar with this sort of work or looking to learn, we can always use your help! Accountability can only occur where YOU demand it.
PRA's
California has a law called the Public Records Act, or “PRA,” that entitles you to access to information kept as public records—that includes records of public school districts. Please contact us at openbook@lexrex.org if you'd like to send one to your district!
Textbooks
To audit the curriculum, we need textbooks for our volunteers to read! If you know of a way to get textbooks or have current textbooks that you would like to donate, please contact us at openbook@lexrex.org! If you don't see information on a book that you need reviewed, donate it! We love to grow where the need is and can't do that without help from people like you.
Reading
We will always need more volunteers to read textbooks. We know you hated reading them as a kid, but reading them and writing a report on what you find is the best way to share your work with parents across the country. No textbooks required - simply let us know that you're interested and we'll do the rest.
Information
When we receive reports from our volunteers on the information contained in the textbooks, we collate those volunteer reports and write a summary on the contents of each book. These summaries will be available online.
Promoting & Fundraising
We can't grow without your help! Share our program with anyone who might be interested. No experience necessary!
